It teaches the karate-ka about the proper way to stand in various stances, how to punch and kick properly without getting hurt yourself. Only proper practice of kihons will lead to a martial artist with proper ability to defend himself.

Edo-Kihons

The are the basic movements which are created using the kihons as a basis. Edo-kihons are combination techniques born by mixing various strikes and blocks with stance movements. Not all strikes can be mixed with all blocks and so proper combinations are a must learn for all karate-ka.

Kata

The word kata means "shape" or "form".
A kata is a sequence of punches, kicks and blocks used in different stances involving both defence and offense at the same time in all directions. Kata’s of various levels of difficulty are designed for the different levels of belts. By practicing kata, a karate-ka can improve his stances, strikes and blocks. Balance and mental strength are gained along with confidence in oneself.
Through the practice of kata, the traditional techniques used for fighting are learned. The attention to detail is necessary to perfect a kata.
Through concentration, dedication and practice, a higher level of learning may be achieved, where the kata is so ingrained in the subconscious mind that no conscious attention is needed.

Kumite

Kumite is sparring with a partner to improve your fighting techniques. In Kyokushin Kaikan Karate, Kumite is full contact without the use of safety equipment. As with all martial arts, the aim of Kumite is not to hurt your opponent, but rather to improve your own techniques and train your body and mind to accept pain and harsh treatment so that when the need arises, fear of getting hurt does not paralyze you.
It is also used to understand your own limits and that of your opponent, thereby learning effectively how to defend yourself properly.

Tamashiwari

This term refers to the techniques used for breaking of bricks, wood and ice etc. It is a requirement for all Karate-ka so that they can learn the limits of their bodies and train themselves to surpass those limits.
Tamashiwari is a training tool which can be used to gauge the level of training the body has undergone to withstand external damage along with the strength developed after training.
